LIVERMORE, Calif. – July 14, 2009 – Topcon Positioning Systems (TPS) recently unveiled the IP-S2, a vehicle-mounted, mobile 3D precision mapping and survey system. The IP-S2 combines dual-frequency GNSS signal tracking and positioning and inertial measurement to integrate laser scanning and digital imaging. Using 3D laser scanners, LIDAR, and/or cameras, the data collected is integrated, time-stamped and geo-referenced. The customer can then quickly and accurately combine LIDAR “point cloud” and digital imaging data to build 3D models of the areas driven. Industry-leading sensor integration creates unlimited applications for the technology in GIS, construction, agriculture, mapping, and machine control -- all areas where Topcon has market leadership. Ray O’Connor, TPS president and CEO, said, Topcon’s Inertial Positioning System (IPS) “makes it possible to track motion through 3D space, creating an instant solution to myriad asset management and data collection applications.” With its high accuracy scanning and inertial measurement capabilities, its ability to support a variety of sensors and its 360-degree hemispherical digital video camera system, O’Connor said, “The IP-S2 can gather accurate measurement data in extremely difficult conditions, such as tunnels, under bridges, in heavily wooded areas or urban canyons. “The applications for the IP-S2 are limitless,” he said. “Whatever you can conceive of in the areas of asset management, data collection on precise location of virtually any subject, using digital photography capabilities, as well as laser scanning options, with its onboard tools the IP-S2 can do the job.” Collecting field data for GIS applications has always been a time-consuming task, usually taking several years to fully accomplish. As a result, many databases are incomplete, preventing managers from utilizing their full potential. Safety has also been an issue, requiring personnel to stand in highly traveled road corridors where most assets are located. Eduardo Falcon, senior vice president and general manager of Topcon’s Emerging Business Unit, said, “The IP-S2 revolutionizes the way in which GIS field data can be collected. One pass of an area at normal vehicular travel speeds provides a complete dataset of highly accurate position information and high resolution imagery.” He added “Using new software tools, GIS operators can easily identify features, assign attributes, and then export them to geospatial applications. The reduction in cost and improvement in safety are exponential compared to traditional ground survey methods.” The IP-S2 standard system includes three high-resolution LiDAR scanners that cover the vehicle path at ground level and sweep the adjacent areas to a distance of 30 meters. The technology can provide location and geo-referencing with survey accuracy of visible utilities, traffic signals and roadways, modeling GIS maps, examining tunnels, taking inventory of and collecting 360-degree digital images (at a rate of 15 frames per second) to catalog surroundings in real time. The IP-S2 software and hardware were designed and constructed in a modular format so that an array of present and future sensors can be easily integrated to the existing scanner ports. The IP-S2 also works in coordination with an online data post-processing service to provide data sets with the highest possible accuracy. Dec. 7, 2009 The IP-S2 mobile survey system was delivered to the first Japanese user, the Satellite Bridge Company Limited in Iwamizawa-city, Hokkaido. Topcon invited Mr. Toshiaki Takabatake, president, as well as Mr. Shigeo Sawaya, corporate auditor, to the Topcon headquarters in Tokyo to celebrate this memorable delivery. Mr. Takabatake said in a speech, “The Satellite Bridge is a joint venture established by five surveying companies in our region. Nov. 10, 2009 Topcon has received an order for 90 GPS receivers from the Geographical Survey Institute (GSI), an affiliate of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT). This is in addition to the 360 receivers ordered in July. Topcon will provide a total of 450 receivers for the GPS Earth Observation Network System (GEONET) operated by the GSI. It is expected the new systems, including additional 90 receivers, will be in operation by the end of March 2010. In 1992, GSI initiated the introduction of Global Positioning System (GPS) Continuously Operating Reference Station (CORS) known as GEONET. As of November 2009, over 1,200 stations nationwide are in place providing precise positioning data to the public. “With this addition of 90 new receivers, more than 35 percent of the GEONET stations will implement Topcon NET-G3 series receivers,” said Takashi Eto, senior manager of the Global Business Planning Group and the Asia & Middle East Marketing Group. Topcon will also provide GPS observation/control software as well as a database management system exclusively designed for the GEONET. “The NET-G3 has an ability to track currently planned L2C and L5 GPS signals. Upgrading the GEONET system with our technology and expertise will certainly benefit the users as soon as the new GPS signals will become available,” Eto said.

GR-3, NET-G3 receive new GPS satellite signal LIVERMORE, Calif. – May 20, 2009 – Topcon Positioning Systems (TPS) engineers have successfully tracked the new L5 signal transmitted from a U.S.-based GPS satellite. More than four years ago, Topcon announced it had receivers capable of tracking L5 signals. Topcon’s current GR-3 and NET-G3 receivers are L5-capable. The satellite began broadcasting the new signal April 10 and Topcon engineers successfully tracked the signal a few days later. The Air Force testing of the L5 signal is presently from one GPS satellite. Ivan Di Federico, TPS senior vice president, engineering, said, “It is expected to be several years before the L5 signal is operational. Topcon’s receivers are ready to utilize the new signal once it is operating and when there are enough satellites transmitting the signals to improve positional quality.” Topcon receivers can also receive GPS/GLONASS L1/L2 as well as GPS L5. In an official announcement, the U.S. Air Force has cautioned the L5 signal is still under development and that quality and accessibility of the signal is not guaranteed. Di Federico said, “Tracking the L5 signal is a testament to the hard work, expertise and dedication of Topcon’s corps of engineers. Starting more than four years ago, our engineers made sure that when the L5 signal became active, our receivers could track it.” He said the L5 signal was received at the Topcon Technology Center in Moscow. The satellite signal was tracked over a three-hour period at the highest satellite elevation. He said the signal was received with the energy potential of 55 dBHz. Topcon engineers have been closely monitoring the progress of the new satellite from its launch, Di Federico said. “Any time new signals are available for use, it benefits our customers who depend on precise positioning information in the fields of surveying, civil engineering, construction, GIS, telematics and agriculture. “The more signals a receiver can pick up, the better the accuracy a customer can get on every job.” He said, “While tracking the signal confirms Topcon equipment’s ability to use the L5 signal when it is ready, we will continue to monitor the improvements to the GPS constellation and implement any adjustments needed to the firmware as additional new signals come online.” |

LIVERMORE, Calif. – July 22, 2009 – Topcon Positioning Systems (TPS) recently announced the release of its Version 3.4 G3 receiver firmware that significantly upgrades the performance and usability of all Topcon GNSS receiver platforms including the industry-leading GR-3 and new GRS-1 systems. Jason Killpack, TPS director of product management, said, “This new firmware represents the next generation in tracking technology. It has an array of new features to aid Topcon users in the field.” He said, “The 3.4 G3 firmware is the first in the marketplace to be able to automatically detect the make of the network receiver creating corrections for the rover and applying the proper bias to the GLONASS system measurements contained in the GNSS network solution.” Killpack said, “Different manufacturers have different offsets (or biases) for the GLONASS constellation of satellites. As each hardware manufacturer outputs different values for GLONASS measurements, it has been a challenge for a customer to mix systems or to operate inside of a GNSS network that was not of the same make as the rover.” “In the past,” he said, “the user had to utilize same-brand bases and rover units to realize the added benefits of GLONASS measurements. Now the Topcon user can enter the make of the base or network manually inside of TopSURV 7.2.3 field software, or the system will apply the proper offsets from the broadcast RTCM 1033 message automatically.” Topcon’s 3.4 firmware gives the flexibility of using different makes and models of base stations with Topcon rover systems. “In today’s network environment, the user is connected to a network that may or may not provide a bias to the GLONASS signal information. The new 3.4 version firmware solves this problem,” Killpack said. MAC Network RTK messages are now supported as well as user configurable troposphere parameters; also additional new RTCM messages are supported, he said. The ability for the user to determine the bias offsets manually or automatically is a large step forward for receiver firmware technology, Killpack said. “This new version of firmware is the perfect upgrade to any Topcon receiver system.” This new 3.4 version firmware, including detailed release notes, as well as all other Topcon firmware and software upgrades, are free downloads to Topcon customers from the Topcon support site. |

The Arab Union of Surveyors organized an International Scientific Conference on surveying and topography at Bustan Grand Hotel in Beirut from 29 June to 1st of July 2009. The conference attracted totally about 400 participants from most Arab countries and some European countries in addition to FIG and other prestigious governmental representatives.

LIVERMORE, Calif. – April 13, 2009 – Topcon Positioning Systems (TPS) has been selected to supply GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite Systems) receivers for the Crustal Movement Observation Network of China (CMONOC). Topcon will supply 132 campaign-mode (portable) GNSS CORS receivers and GNSS choke ring antennas for CMONOC. The CMONOC project was established by the China Earthquake Administration (CEA) of the People’s Republic of China, to monitor crustal deformation and to predict earthquakes using GNSS technology. In the context of the devastating Wenchuan Earthquake (8.0 on Richter scale) last year, the Chinese government hopes to use state-of-the-art technologies to enhance disaster-relief capability. CEA is planning to use the equipment to re-measure more than 2,000 ground monuments throughout China in 2009. Crustal deformation is measured by tracking the movement of points on the Earth's surface, ground tilt and strain, as well as fault slip. The Topcon Net-G3 family of receivers will be used to record geodetic data for the CMONOC in campaign mode, also known as portable, episodic or survey mode. At the contract signing ceremony held on March 27, Li Qiang, director of Crustal Movement Monitoring Research Center of CEA, said, “The cooperation with Topcon on CMONOC project is just the starting point for both sides, we look forward to further strengthening communication and cooperation with Topcon in the future.” Eduardo Falcon, senior vice president and general manager of TPS’ Emerging Business unit, said, “The accuracy and preservation of data are paramount to the CMONOC project and Topcon is honored to have been selected to assist in this scientific endeavor critical to earthquake prediction in China. “By better understanding the Earth’s natural processes through monitoring and tracking the deformation, the devastating effects of earthquakes can hopefully be reduced and avoided. LIVERMORE, Calif. – April 14, 2009 – Topcon Positioning Systems (TPS) has been selected to supply GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite Systems) receivers and software for Shandong Province Continuously Operating Reference Station Network (SDCORS). The SDCORS network is designed to provide full coverage of Shandong Province of China with network RTK capability and it is an effort by the provincial government to improve and modernize its surveying infrastructure. The system consists of up to 120 reference stations within or in the close vicinity of the province and will operate continuously to provide network-RTK or network-DGPS services to subscribers. SDCORS will be operated by Shandong Provincial Agency of Surveying and Mapping. Forty-nine Topcon Net-G3 GNSS CORS receivers and CR-G3 GNSS choke ring antennas, and TopNet software with 120 connection nodes have been selected for SDCORS through a public tender. This prize is awarded to individuals who achieved remarkable results on the development and public understanding of the promotion of science and technology in Japan.
